PlanetSide 2

Though the presence of shooters has receded somewhat because of the constant nagging of the players by Call of Duty, shooters are still played often and with enjoyment. However, few shooters offer what PlanetSide 2 offers, and no, we don’t mean just shooting people on alien planets. What PlanetSide 2 offers you is to play a very decent shooter completely for free. Yep, that’s right – PlanetSide is a free MMO shooter that you can pick up on Steam.

Battlefield – in Space

Being free made PlanetSide 2 quite popular with gamers, but that’s not all the game offers. There are plenty of good things to be said about this game, things that make PlanetSide 2 an enjoyable experience for anyone who picks the game up. For starters, PlanetSide 2 offers battles on a massive scale. There isn’t a single winning objective, but you get a feeling you’re in an actual battle where both you and the enemy push against each other, capturing strategic points and trying to one-up the enemy. Each planet is engulfed in war with the momentum constantly swinging in one way or the other.
Gameplay-wise, PlanetSide 2 is not much different from other shooters. This is not a bad thing, however, but a good thing, as nothing is sacrificed for the sake of scale, as it has been sacrificed in EVE Online. The game plays great, the shooting is on point, with both tracers and hit markers being implied, and you’re also given the ability to drive vehicles, man the turrets and even fly airplanes. Not only that, but the game features classes of soldiers that serve a different purpose on the battlefield.
However, there are a few things that we didn’t like. For starters, the game teaches you very little about the mechanics and controls. Sure, you know how to aim down the barrel of a gun and shoot, but what about flying a plane or driving? The game gives you only brief introductions, and then leaves you to your own devices. Furthermore, the game does feature an upgrade system that lets you work on your weapon, or lets you even buy other weapons, but these upgrades are very expensive, and you’re going to have to grind for it. The game may be free, but the content is not… Well, not within the game universe, that is.

Conclusion

In the end, PlanetSide 2 is one of the better free-to-play MMOs. The scale of the game is really massive, and that’s really appealing to the gamers. Not only that, but the gameplay is very decent, and, as the subtitle says, it feels like you’re playing Battlefield, but on alien planets. The game does have its downsides, because it doesn’t teach you how to play and puts hefty price tags on everything, but, once you get your fundamentals down, you’ll be able to play like a real pro.
